A lot of people are enquiring about the image used in the latest sunday times poster(2 posts down) so here is just a quick explanation. Its a picture by Ruven Afandor i came across on holiday in spain about 2 years ago.

We ventured to Seville for a day trip and lining the main street of the city were big billboards displaying his photographs , they were made up of images of spanish ladies, flamenco dancers etc done in very striking black and white. Basically the image used in the poster is a picture of a picture, you can pick up the book that contained all the images from that collection  here.

One thing led to another….

I recently picked up the second in the series of Cottam edits in the mighty Plugd records, the B side(unnamed) was immediately the winner for me, it’s an edit of an afro funk tune nicely cut up and re arranged behind a steady mid tempo beat.
As with a lot of the edits I pick up I wondered about the original artist and song and in this case it also provoked me into checking out more of the Afro beat sound.
The following week in Plugd I browsed through a few Afro albums and grabbed a couple for a quick listen, during a flick through Afro Baby, a compilation released on soundway back in 2004 I heard a familiar voice, it was the original of the above mentioned edit.
It’s a track called “Lagos Si Si”, by Bola Johnson and was originally released in 1973. The compilation comes complete with a nice gatefold with a brief rundown of the artist etc for each track. It turns out he is talking about a country girl (a si si is a good looking girl) who is up to no good, hanging out in the clubs and behaving in a way her parents wouldn’t like hence his calls of  “I go tell your mama!    “I go tell your papa!
I’ve actually fallen for the original over the edit at this stage but it’s a definite example of how edits stir up interest in music that might not usually reach a certain buyer or demographic.
With the majority of edits the original artist gets no mention on the record etc but in this case it led to me buying a fully licensed compilation so in turn Bola got his just royalties and it has led me onto a whole new road of music that is fascinating in terms of history and music. A fine days work all round.

Evenin’ all. The Jazz weekend was a total belter, basically. The ‘Not how WHEN!’ guys gave everyone a lesson in Music including us. Well me anyways.

Since its nearing the end of the month, its about that time again, the last Sunday means Sunday Times…..time…ahem.

Back in August, at the third of our gatherings, something really seemed to hit off. So going on the grounds of that, we’re returning to that line-up in the hope of recreating it. With all this talk of ‘replays’ we’re aware that we may be stepping into a tender situation but we can confirm that we have invited Thierry Henry and Richard Dunne to come up, have a few Pints and talk it out. We’re not guaranteeing anything but maybe the lads can come to an agreement over funk 45’s. Maybe.

So if you have methodically remembered all the previous lineups then you don’t need this bit. Feel free to skip to the end, go on.

Joining us for the early evening is Alan Devitt, bringing his bag of Dub and Reggae, believe me paying for records on a Ryanair flight from Kingston aint cheap folks….not at all. Respeck.

Seemingly since that last August session Justin aka Jus-me has been seen wandering aimlessly wondering what to do on the last Sunday of the month. He even mistakenly went to Spain when he got over confused. This is very saddening. So its for this reason he’s back up to play us some of his records. Lets hope this can get his mind back in the right place.

Due to the long gap since the last time, Justin has brought some moral support in the form of Eoin Walsh, his bandmate with the impressionists. Eoin will be bringing his bass, guitar and possibly trumpet. I don’t know if Eoin has six arms or not but it will be interesting nonetheless. Reports from the last Elementary gig are all good so we’re looking forward to the lads.

We’ll be joining the dots in between with all sorts of everything…and everything else.

Almost forgot that Stevie will be rockin the end of Movember with the official mo’ party in the Pav afterwards at Footsteps!End the night with a dance with a moustachioed man if yer that way inclined (or just want to have a good night)!bo!

As Usual thats,

Malick Sidibe capturing Bamako youth

Only a greater presence knows why this has taken so long but now its here so start reading and start believing. Theres a lot to transfer to readers via the combined attack of text, youtube, stolen sound clips, visual images from afar and important further reading for all so lets get it started.

So your in Bamako, Mali, in the 60’s,maybe the 50’s and soon to be the 70’s. The place is exploding with energy, the scene is in the clubs and you want to show the world just what its like in this melting pot. Some guy has the camera and he seems to be at all the events, so you want to look your best and let people know what this place is all about. The guy with the camera is Malick Sidibé, who in the future is to be decorated with the prestigious Hasselblad Award, the golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and ICP award for lifetime achievement, more importantly for us he is credited with documenting the burgeoning youth culture of an effervescent Mali in those times. Relevance? Well the images adorning the Sunday Times Posters number 3 and 4 come from the lens of this important man. Due to dubious photoshop skills and a lack of imagination (and a inspirational visit to his exhibition at FOAM gallery in Amsterdam last Summer) these are lifted from some of Malicks original work. Rather than try and claim it to be some artistic gift (More of a want to share) we are wholly grateful to be even able to see these images and if you want more I would advise you to go out and get this, which is, apart from the stunning images, a serious piece of design work. Perhaps a better starting point is this publication but either way you will end up holding an important piece of photographic documentation thats well worth the asking price.

Sunday Times - October

To be honest I’m still tired from the last one, if you missed it you missed out. Seemingly Colm, the little tyke, was so excited he had to take the day off school on Monday! Thankfully it being the jazz weekend and all this one may indeed be bigger. We gots two of our favourite disc jockey types on board for a big Sunday session to round off what is pretty much the best looking jazz festival for a long time.

2wfqpeqJoining us are the ‘Not How, WHEN! chaps, mysteriously named Timethought and the Yew Tree. Not so mysterious to most folks I would guess but doesnt really matter who the lads are if yer just into listening to the good stuff. The ‘Not How, WHEN!’ birthday during the summer was one of the best nights I’ve had out all year, they gots the rekkids!

The Yew Tree (Taxus baccata) is a protected species and is particulalry rare. Easily identified by its lanceolate leaves, its uncanny ability to consume large amounts of Murphys (as exhibited at Sunday Times August session) and a vast, tasteful record collection. The largest stand of this species can be found in Killarney National Park but on alternatively you can just drop in on the bank holiday Sunday and observe a Yew Tree in a different environment…….with less walking……and rain….and more pints for all.

rs5s8nSecond only to the H1N1 virus is Sir Timethought of Leamlaras infectious love for all things music. Has turned me on to many many records and we’re glad to have him up for the Jazz weekend special. Our day is the last in a busy wekend for him too, playing some at Pharoah Sanders, in Plugd and the Cruibin aswell, busy times.Just dont try and Rob his jacket…

As always we’ll be playing bits and bobs throughout and we’ll be getting more lively as we approach the end of the day….and Dam Funk. Gonna be some weekend.

So usual applies,

Sunday Times! 27th of September!

Sunday Times - SeptemberWahey!  We’re back.

We didnt really go anywhere though so thats not much of a claim. One of us finished college and one us went back to college so we’re both just bums sitting about waiting for this really.

Sunday Times is little bit different this month with a bit of live action and a bit of father and son djing action.

Guesting on the ‘doin the dj’ front we have Stevie G and Colm Kennefick. Dont let the difference in second name fool you as we’re pretty sure the lads are brothers, or father and son. Something anyways.

Between being on the radio 24/7, keeping the Pavillion running smoothly and anchoring the midfield at Liverpool and Internationally with England, Stevie G is a busy man. He has been accosted by many of his peers for diving and influencing referees but kudos always arrives for his djing and top musical choices. Even though he got in a spot of trouble for argueing with a fellow Dj earlier this year, he did get of with a slap on the wrist and was back to knocking em’ in at Anfield and on air also.

Stevies twin brother Colm is a busy man about town playing rekkids and eating red hula hoops all over the place, this is if he’s not in Limerick, Galway or Dublin which he appears regularly. Colm has been upping the stakes recently on the production front with Brian Deady’s upcoming album and with his own group Freezer Room. Speaking of Freezer Room we get onto our third, and somewhat unorthdox ‘Sunday Times!’ guest but a welcome addition.

2609x0lElaine Dowling has contributed her vocals to two tracks on the upcoming Freezer Room E.P and with remixes coming in from Atjazz and FishGoDeep on Weapon Of Choice it promises to be pretty big. Elaine will be playing some Freezer Room and her own material in a folky interlude to the usual funk and disco antics on the night.

So thats three guests ya?Oh and myself and John will be filling in all gaps with the usual jazz, soul, funk, psyche, dub, reggae, disco and house, as per usual a disco session will probably ensue as people ‘loosen up’ toward the end of the evening. The two lads will be hotfooting it down to the pav afterwards to knock out the disco at the opening night for footsteps, looks good all round.

Looks grand doesnt it?

So the usual….

Sunday Times! Sunday 30th August

Usually the phrase ‘it’s that time of the month‘ coincides with some moaning and romantic comedies coupled with ice cream (apologies). Well ‘that time of the month’ in this case means ‘Sunday Times!’ time of the month.  Sunday Times - August

Our guest this month will be Aaron Burke AKA Itchi. A number of stories surround his acquirement of that particular name…

1. As a small child he ceaselessly scratched himself much to the discomfort off all who met him
2. He was fond of the same cat killing lifestyle made famous by the Simpsons character of the same name
3. He has outstanding skills in the area of cutting up great music in a proper hip hop style

I’m plumping for a combination of all three but whatever the origin it promises to be a good evening. Who knows maybe we’ll all end up itching each other.

All spaces will be filled by your hosts Barry and John with a mix of jazz, soul, funk, rock, afro beat, disco and whatnot with the obligatory extended disco session occurring when it gets dark outside. Probably.

We’ve got some exciting things lined up for the future instalments with some guests in the pipeline that might attract the attention of a few folk around here. All in all its shaping up quite well.

So that’s Sunday Times!

Sunday Times! 26th July

Along with mass, fried breakfast and Sunday roasts, Sunday times has quickly established itself as a traditional Sunday activity for most of Corks inhabitants…possibly…and so were doing it again and it promises to be as satisfying as the above all rolled into one sausage/roast chicken/religious smorgasbord.

After blazing a trail with his patented sit down djing© at the last Sunday Times, Justin aka Jus-me will be dropping back in for a good old sit and play session of his superb record collection. Sitting down is the new standing up.

Alan Devitt who allegedly fathered at least three quarters of Bob Marleys children and is King Tubbys brother will be swinging by with the dub and roots vibes for individuals of that persuasion.

In between all this Barry Walsh (that be me) and John Hennessy (that be er….John Hennessy) will fill the gaps with soul and funk and disco and jazz and house and rock and….you get the picture. Promises to be more discoey (?) as the night goes on.

All in all for the measly price of nothing so an bord snip nua wont be getting anything off us.

Unfortunately this was meant to coincide with a new food market that is starting up in the Barracks on Barrack street and around the general area of an Realt Dearg, bit of a date mixup with that being on the next weekend. We’ll be sure to match it up next time.

So that’s Sunday Times,

Sunday Times! 28th June…

Sunday Times June

Understanding that everyone has had a huge void to fill on Sunday evenings since Glenroe finished, you are cordially invited to attend an evening of, well, a bit of everything. Soul, funk , jazz, rock, disco ‘ip ‘op and house will most probably be covered with your skinny and ginger hosts (respectively that is) Barry Walsh and John Hennessy.

These two will be joined by a number of friends who also enjoy spending Sunday evening listening to good music rather than watching re-runs of heartbeat.

First up is Justin (Jus-me) who will be dropping in with his jazz and hip hop stylings, amongst other things. His musical choices will massage your inner ear and prepare you for another week at the coalface (physical massages are under private negotiation).

Who knows what other folks may turn up between here and then but we’ll keep you posted.
